At the 2011 Seoul Motor Show Hyundai Motor staged a world premiere of the Hyundai Blue2 concept car (codenamed HND-6), a mid-size FCEV which shows a blueprint for future sedans. The name 'Blue2' is a combination of Hyundai's sub eco-brand 'Blue Drive' and the number `2' from H2, the symbol for hydrogen gas.

Aiming at gaining early leadership of the FCEV market, Hyundai Blue2 concept is powered by a fuel cell electric system that delivers a stack power of 90kW (1.65kW/L) and fuel economy of 34.9km/l. The Blue2 is materialized in a sporty and luxurious style, a combination of futuristic, flowing designs and eco-friendly features. The Hyundai Blue2 concept is equipped with low-resistance tires and alloy wheels which are designed to improve aerodynamic performance, while the car's interior design encompasses a futuristic look by using eco-friendly new materials.

Hyundai's concept keywords for the exterior design are 'Intersected Flow,' featuring innovative and dynamic designs. The vehicle's condition is visible via unique and futuristic images on the exterior of the car through outside LED screen panels, which are located on both the front and rear of the car. Blue2 also features a welcome system which recognizes the driver, while an automatic opening door system enhances the driver's convenience. Conventional side mirrors are replaced by side cameras and a roof camera, offering a state-of-the-art driving environment.

The exterior designs flow inside the vehicle, with asymmetrically-designed dashboards and doors to optimize a driver's convenience and add emotional value. Wider seats enable people to get in and out of the vehicle more comfortably.

Hyundai combined the cluster and center fascia, applying an advanced Transparent Organic Light Emitting Diode (TOLED) monitor and ultra-light tempered glass, called Gorilla® Glass, providing more accurate and vivid graphic information. The infotainment system is operated by a Motion Sensor Moustick, a haptic wheel and motion sensor that respond to the driver's touch and hand movements, respectively, giving drivers a new experience.

Hyundai Blue2 concept aims to satisfy all the senses of future drivers, including the air they breathe: A cluster ionizer freshens the air inside the vehicle, while antibacterial genuine leather with leaf-shaped patterns, called 'eco-graphic perforation,' enhances an eco-friendly look and feel.

2011 Kia Naimo Concept


Making its world premiere at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show, the Kia Naimo electric concept car combines Korean heritage with innovative modern features.

Taking its name from the Korean word "Ne-mo", (pronounced 'Neh-mo', meaning 'square shape'), the Kia Naimo electric crossover utility vehicle (CUV) was conceived by Kia's international design team in Seoul, and is characterised principally by its simple lines and solid, muscular stance.

The simple overall design is accentuated by a number of striking key details, such as the wrap-around windscreen and asymmetric sunroof, and the front and rear dot-style LED head- and positioning-lamps. This mix of simple and complex is a common trait of many traditional Korean arts and crafts.

Kia's design team also made use of innovative technology to give the car a premium feel and to ensure the car's exterior remained uncluttered. For example, Kia Naimo has no traditional wiper blade on the windscreen - instead it employs a high-intensity air jet at the base of the windscreen that performs an 'air wiper' function. Conventional door mirrors have also been replaced with miniature cameras installed in the A-pillars.

Kia Naimo's interior was designed to evoke a strong sense of tranquility and features hand-crafted materials throughout. Korean oak is used to trim the interior door panels and the entire interior floor, Korean "Han-ji" paper is used for the head lining. Alongside these traditional elements sit modern features such as a transparent organic light emitting diode display instrument panel and full connectivity."Naimo is a perfect balance of innovation, high-tech and Korean tradition. It was heavily inspired by the purity and grace of traditional Korean arts and crafts, but combines this with cutting edge technologies to deliver a truly premium experience," commented Kia Motors' Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer.

The third electric vehicle design to be unveiled by Kia Motors Corporation in a year, the 3.9-metre long Kia Naimo concept explores the practicalities of introducing a zero-emissions, five-door, four-seater city car into a future niche market.

Measuring 3,890 mm in length, the Kia Naimo's generous wheelbase, width and height (2,647, 1,844 and 1,589 mm respectively) - plus the short overhangs which place a wheel at each corner - ensure that the cabin provides exceptional head, leg and shoulder room for the occupants.

The concept car has no B-pillars and features rear-hinged rear doors to maximise easy access to the cabin, and a three-way split opening boot-lid, allows versatile access to the load bay for varying luggage sizes.

Power comes from a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with a maximum output of 80 kW (109 ps) and maximum torque of 280 Nm, enabling Kia Naimo to reach a top speed of 150 kph (93 mph).

A twin-pack 27 kWh battery is located under the boot floor and uses innovative Lithium Ion Polymer technology that offers numerous advantages over other battery types. Equipped with this battery, Kia Naimo provides a driving range of 200 km (124 miles) on a single charge. To enhance range, the showcar is fitted with special low-drag 20-inch diameter alloy wheels.

Under the quick recharging cycle (50 kW) the Kia Naimo's battery can be recharged to 80 percent of its capacity within 25 minutes. Under the normal cycle (3.3 kW), 100 percent power is attained after five and a half hours.

Naimo will join Kia's growing test fleet of hybrid, electric and fuel-cell vehicles being extensively driven in widely varying conditions to develop future production models with zero or significantly reduced emissions.

2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S



The new Porsche Panamera Turbo S is raising the bar for sporting four-door luxury cars. The new addition to the Gran Turismo range offers a unique combination of performance and efficiency, driving dynamics and comfort. The 4.8-litre, V8 twin-turbocharged engine delivers 550 hp (410 kW), an increase of ten per cent or 50 hp (37 kW) more than the Panamera Turbo. Torque also increases from 700 to 750 Nm and in the "Sport" and "Sport Plus" mode of the standard Sport Chrono Package Turbo - and during kick-down in normal mode - the eight cylinder engine delivers 800 Nm courtesy of the over-boost function.

This uprated engine delivers record sprint times for the new top of the range Panamera. When using the Launch Control function, 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) is reached in 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 191 mph (306 km/h) possible. However, despite the increased performance, fuel consumption of the Porsche Panamera Turbo S remains at the moderate level of the Panamera Turbo at 24.6mpg Combined on the NEDC - an example of Porsche Intelligent Performance.

The increased performance compared with the Panamera Turbo can be attributed to two main enhancements. Improved turbochargers with titanium-aluminium turbine wheels and modified engine control management. The use of the innovative titanium-aluminium alloy reduces the weight of the turbine and compressor wheel. This results in a lower moment of inertia, and thus improved and more responsive acceleration.

2011 Ford Mad Max Concept


Ford Australia, in partnership with TopGear Australia magazine, has unveiled not one, but two spectacular new Mad Max Interceptors.

The 21st century concepts have been designed by Ford's designers for TopGear Magazine Australia to help celebrate the revival of the Mad Max action movie genre.

It is more than 30 years since Hollywood director, George Miller's original Mad Max movie - starring Mel Gibson and a jet black Ford XB coupe-based Interceptor - hit movie screens around the world.

Ford Australia's Melbourne-based Asia, Pacific and Australia Design Director, Chris Svensson, jumped at the chance to design a new Interceptor and has since thrown the full weight of Ford Australia's Research Centre behind the project, with stunning results.

"Our entire team was very excited to be involved in this after-hours project and they approached it with a great deal of enthusiasm - even those that were too young to remember the first Mad Max movie," Svensson said. "We had a special screening of the original movie so they could understand it."

Led by chief designer passenger cars Asia, Pacific and Africa, Todd Willing, the team created several way-out concepts that pay homage to styling cues from the original XB Coupe Interceptor.

Out of the concepts two have been chosen by the magazine to feature in the April issue of TopGear Australia magazine, on sale now, because they take body design, power sources and weaponry to a futuristic level.

TopGear Australia magazine readers will be invited to vote on which design Ford should take to the next level.

The winning car will be turned into a clay model, and then a scale version, which is expected to be revealed later this year.

The two competing designs - by designers Nima Nourian and Simon Brook - are limitless in their imagination, technology and weaponry. Among the weaponry is an industrial-strength "taser" mounted to the bonnet to zap bad guys on bikes straight off the road.

Other futuristic movie features include a titanium-lined body shell to interrupt police scanners and wheels with extendable spikes to shred enemy vehicles.

Nourian said his design paid tribute to the 1970s Interceptor, but also drags the car into the future.

"There are some great scenes in the first movie with high-speed chases and clashes with the bad guys, and I thought I'd take that one step further," he said. "So instead of having weapons and machine guns, we've got an industrial strength taser that'll zap cars dead and out of the way.

Brook's car was equally threatening. "During high-speed pursuits, the wheel's inner spokes on my design would pop out and start ripping up other cars," Brook said. "They'd do some serious damage to other people's vehicles."

Brook's design takes cues from the current FG Falcon but advances it further into Armageddon-land, while adding touches of the retro Interceptor as well. "I wanted to keep it clean and aerodynamic in its essence, but still brutal and tough."

2012 Aston Martin Virage Volante

The Aston Martin Virage sits between the enduringly elegant DB9 and overtly sporting DBS, providing customers with a car that remains luxurious and understated but delivers increased performance and crucially performance that is always accessible for effortless driving.Aston Martin's revered hand-built 6.0 litre V12 engine produces 490 bhp (365 kW/497 PS) and 570 nM (420 lb. Ft) of torque and through its carbon fibre prop shaft, is mated to a six-speed Touchtronic II automatic transmission mounted on the transaxle contributing to perfect 50:50 weight balance.

The Aston Martin Virage's dynamics have been tuned to deliver an engaging yet more refined driving experience, where the driver can extract the maximum performance from the car with greater ease. A newly developed Adaptive Damping System (ADS) intelligently 'reads' the road to provide optimum road holding, adapting to different conditions. The system now selects up to five different stiffness settings within normal mode, and a further five stiffer settings within sport mode.

Aiding driver control, a 'Sport' button on the facia allows the driver to select a sharper throttle response and faster gear changes while also holding the gears without automatically shifting up at the revolution limiter.

Aston Martin Virage will be delivered with Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes as standard - bucking the trend in this market - offering progressive and tremendous stopping power. Powerful, resistant to fade and much lighter than conventional cast-iron discs, the CCM braking system means that not only is the overall vehicle weight reduced, but the weight saving at each wheel means that a better balance between ride comfort and handling can be struck. Lower rotational mass also provides improved acceleration.

Aston Martin Virage capitalises on the technology from the DBS and unites it with the comfort and refinement found in the DB9 and Rapide. Aston Martin's own bonded aluminium 'VH' architecture that forms the backbone of the marque's sports cars, takes inspiration from the aerospace industry where weight reduction is the ultimate goal. Strong yet light, the inherent properties of modular aluminium lend themselves perfectly to an extremely rigid and versatile platform which allows the production of a Aston Martin Virage coupe and Volante.

The Aston Martin Virage sits low and wide asserting the power which lies beneath; single bi-xenon headlamps follow the lines of the car's flanks to give a more crisp and modern look from the front. A new aluminium metal front grille, inspired by the One-77, features five horizontal vanes which are chamfered creating an aerofoil profile. The new front bumper is pure and relieves the car of any visual complexities, contributing to the overall simplicity of design. The front wings distinguish the Aston Martin Virage from its stable mates housing a new modern interpretation of the Aston Martin iconic side strake housing six LEDs elegantly forming the side repeater. Aston Martin Virage's side sills carry the simplicity of the front bumper through to the rear diffuser which houses a body-coloured blade accentuating the width of the car.

As drivers and passengers open the signature swan wing doors, they are greeted by the aroma of seven hides of the finest Bridge of Weir leather expertly hand stitched by craftsmen. Inspiration has been taken from luxury leather goods to produce a pinstripe welt which flows down either side of the facia and along the seat and door, drawing your eye through the car. Each Aston Martin Virage will have 70 man hours of expert craftsmanship lavished on the interior alone to create the famous sophisticated Aston Martin interior. In all, over 200 man hours will be spent handcrafting the Virage at Aston Martin's global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, England as it becomes the tenth major production car to be built there in the space of less than eight years.

Simplicity runs throughout the car with the new fully integrated Satellite Navigation system that has been developed in conjunction with Garmin. The new system simplifies operation through the existing four-way joystick mounted on the facia. A new 6.5 inch high resolution display uses the latest graphics and maps to visually and aurally guide the driver to their destination.

Standard equipment includes heated seats (Sports seats only), cruise control, satellite navigation, Bluetooth telephone preparation and the powerful 700W Aston Martin Premium Audio System with Dolby® Pro Logic II® and full iPod® integration.

Performance

Sitting at the heart of any Aston Martin sports car is an evocative engine and no more so in the new Virage which adopts the famous hand-built 6.0 litre V12 which is assembled in Aston Martin's bespoke engine plant in Köln, Germany. Aston Martin technicians spend in excess of 20 hours building and testing every engine before sending it to Gaydon where it is mounted as far back in the Aston Martin Virage as possible to contribute to its perfect 50:50 weight balance.

The Aston Martin Virage engine produces 490 bhp (365 kW/497 PS) and 570 nM (420 lb. Ft) of torque and is identified from other V12s in the family with a black plenum. The plenum houses a new 'five pillar design' increasing the rigidity of the manifold delivering an improved sound quality. The V12 has been designed to deliver over 85% of Virage's peak torque at only 1,500 rpm providing for instant and crucially, real-world useable traction.

Aston Martin Product Development Director, Ian Minards explains: "The new Virage represents another landmark Aston Martin in the sporting GT class, combining luxury with performance. Our Engineering team has sought to balance the elements of contemporary design, strong performance credentials and driving fluidity. We have focused on the major building blocks of automotive performance and control, as well as the intricate details of operation, comfort and craftsmanship."

The Touchtronic II transmission features as standard, and contributes to Aston Martin Virage's refined power delivery making gear changes tangible yet effortless. Engineered in conjunction with ZF, the six-speed automatic has optimally placed ratios to remain quiet on motorway stretches and deliver an engaging response when driving spiritedly. Controlled through finely polished glass switches depicting P, R, N, D on the facia, the driver can engage automatic mode, and the intelligent control system will decide precisely the right time to change gear in order to achieve the smoothest ratio move and the optimum fuel economy.

In addition, the driver has the option of pulling either of the magnesium leather clad paddles to engage manual mode. Mounted on the steering column so that the driver can always easily locate either up or down, the manual mode gives the driver complete control.

Virage features a Sport button on the facia which when depressed will create a heightened driving experience through faster gear changes and the system will override the automatic change-up so the driver is able to hold the gear on the revolution limiter.

Control

The new Aston Martin Virage features a new Adaptive Damping System (ADS) which has been tuned to suit the particular character of Aston Martin's latest sporting GT. Each damper has five individual computer controlled stiffness settings. This allows the Virage to 'read' the road via strategically placed sensors around the car, constantly adjusting the ride at each corner. Using yaw, accelerometer, steering wheel, throttle and brake (ABS) sensors, the intelligent system can take into account the demands the driver is making of the car at any given time. The Adaptive Damping Electronic Control Unit (ECU) uses these measurements to determine the most appropriate damper settings required at any given time, becoming stiffer for better handling and control during dynamic driving, and becoming softer for greater ride comfort during 'normal' driving conditions.

Increasing driver control further, the glass ADS button on the facia allows the driver to override the system to push the dampers into a firmer range of settings. As the button is depressed, for the initial five seconds, all damper settings are set to their firmest providing the driver a tangible difference. After five seconds the system reverts to the optimum setting within the firmer range resulting in a more focussed but comfortable driving experience.

Virage is delivered to customers with Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes as standard - bucking the trend in this market. Critically acclaimed to provide the ultimate in progressive stopping power, the CCM discs take advantage of six piston callipers at the front and four at the rear. Giving the driver tangible control when braking, they are much more resistant to fade than conventional cast iron discs and at 12.5 kg lighter than a conventional system they contribute to a lower unsprung mass aiding ride comfort and handling.

The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system has been specifically tuned for the Aston Martin Virage. A three-stage DSC system allows the driver to tailor the level of electronic intervention according to the type of driving. In default mode, the system is set to 'on' which will limit any tyre slip in difficult conditions, and provide the maximum amount of security possible without being intrusive. Holding the DSC button for four seconds will engage 'Track Mode' which delays the electronic intervention further, creating a safe yet purer experience. Depressing the button for a further five seconds will disengage the system completely.

Using knowledge learned from the V8 Vantage Roadster and DBS Volante, the new Virage Volante features a solidly-mounted rear subframe as well as front and rear shear panels which deliver high levels of rigidity. This means that the Virage Volante retains its sporting dynamic characteristics, uncompromised by the open roof. For the first time on an Aston Martin the Virage coupe also uses a shear panel at the rear of the car, again to enhance strength and rigidity.

The fully integrated Aston Martin standard satellite navigation system has been completely revised for the Aston Martin Virage benefiting from a new system developed in conjunction with Garmin which is operated using the existing joystick and facia buttons. Features include clearer graphics, improved pictorial junction views and safety camera data. The new system maintains its integrated look, out of view beneath the real wood facia, rising seamlessly from the centre console at the touch of a button. Control through the aluminium four-way joystick prevents unattractive finger marks on the screen which impede clear vision.

Design, Refinement and Comfort

The new Virage was designed at Aston Martin's dedicated design studio at its global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, England. As an independent company, Aston Martin can take an initial sketch, through to a full size clay model, then to a prototype and ultimately into production all on one site. It allows the marque to be agile and reactive customer trends and demands.

Virage will be built in the same production facility as the DBS and DB9 and will be Aston Martin's tenth major new model to go into production at the UK site since Gaydon was opened.

Marek Reichman, Design Director at Aston Martin said: "The new Virage moves Aston Martin's design language evolution into a new contemporary phase. We have sculpted a new face which sharpens and refines the Aston Martin Virage whilst still being instantly recognisable as a pure Aston Martin sports car. The whole car looks as if it was precision machined from a single billet of aluminium emphasising the attention to detail and exquisite surface language. At Aston Martin we pride ourselves on beautifully honed surfaces created by skilled craftsmen."

Reichman continues: "The Virage will always delight, from picking up the glass and polished aluminium ECU key, walking up and admiring its stunning form, and tacitly appreciating the treatment of all the other senses through the finish of the materials. It makes every journey an event.

"The Virage doesn't wear its identity on its sleeve, it doesn't shout 'look at me', rather calmly hints at its potential, through pure lines and a low elegant stance."

New single lens bi-xenon lights lie beneath a new front headlamp which houses a side light 'bar' dissipating LED light giving the Virage an individual yet subtle visual on the road.

New 20" wheels add to the sense of proportion with a five spoke twin-prong design as standard and a 10-spoke forged diamond turned wheel as an option. Customers are also afforded the option of coordinating their brake callipers with their exterior paint colour with black, grey, red and yellow now being offered.

The Aston Martin engineering team sought to create a sports car that offers customers the highest levels of refinement yet combined with the increased power and control desired by customers. To this ends extra sound insulation has been applied to the front and rear bulkheads to create a relaxed ambiance when cruising. The Aston Martin Virage Volante features an extra layer of Thinsulate material in the fabric hood making the Volante feel like a coupe when the hood is up. Each Virage features seven hides of the finest leather sourced from Scandinavia with each interior taking in excess of 70 man hours to hand craft. It is this attention to detail which creates one of the finest and opulent moving interiors in existence today. As the driver or passenger opens the swan wing doors - which open up and out at 12 degrees to prevent any scrapes on nearby kerbs - they are greeted to pinstriped leather seams which are hand stitched by one seamstress just to be sure of a consistency throughout the car. The 10-way adjustable sports seats are sculpted to provide maximum support and comfort while the two-stage heated seats instantly shake the chill on a frosty morning. The option of an alternative lightweight seat arrangement is available with the 2+0 layout on the coupe.

Contributing to the feeling of luxury, finely polished glass buttons adorn the facia inviting the driver to select their desired setup or control. Aston Martin's design team have stayed true to the ethos of using material honestly where facias are real hand finished and polished woods, dials are milled aluminium, and leathers retain their patina and aroma years into their life.

In coupe form, Aston Martin Virage is available as a 2+2 or a 2+0 as an option, the latter providing a rear parcel shelf ideal for soft bags, while also reducing weight.

2012 Aston Martin V8 Vantage S Roadster


The Aston Martin Vantage range comes of age with the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage S characterised by a host of new driver-focussed features all designed to push the honed dynamics of the standard Vantage to a new benchmark level.

Aston Martin's own 4.7 litre V8 engine has been engineered to deliver peak power of 430 bhp (436 PS / 321 kW) at 7300 rpm and torque of 490 Nm (361 lb.ft) at 5000 rpm and is coupled with a new ground-up developed Sportshift™ II transmission specifically designed for the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S with seven short ratio gears to deliver the most engaging and intense driver involvement.

"The Aston Martin V8 Vantage S epitomises every attribute of the V8 Vantage and pushes the driver experience beyond what we have offered before," says Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin, "It combines dynamic exhilaration with all the charming finesse, beauty and practicality already associated with the Vantage range."

Dynamic revisions are central to the Vantage S, with a quickened steering rack ratio of 15:1 compared to 17:1 on the standard car and a larger diameter front brake disc with new six-piston front brake calipers. New springs and dampers, and wider rear wheels also contribute to chassis revisions. A new dynamic stability control (DSC) system specifically tuned to the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S along with a new brake module providing features such as Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) which provides assistance in emergency braking situations, and Hill Start Assist (HSA). Bespoke tyres have been developed with Bridgestone to optimise road holding enhancing dynamic feel.At the core of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S is the new seven speed Sportshift™ II automated manual transmission, offered as standard and delivers exceedingly rapid gear changes, twenty per cent quicker than Sportshift™. The extra gear permits shorter well-spaced ratios taking advantage of the optimum torque, which combined with a shorter final drive ratio of 4.182:1 delivers quicker acceleration and an enhanced sporting feel. The inherent benefits of a single clutch system reduces complexity and significant weight over a dual clutch solution. Sportshift™ II allows the driver to take an increased level of control, modulating the throttle pedal to achieve the desired type of gear change. In addition, the Vantage S features a 'Sport' button which quickens the gear changes and gives the driver a more aggressive throttle response while also opening the exhaust bypass valves across most of the engine speed range perfectly characterising the 'S' variant.

As with every Aston Martin, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S benefits from its own unique sound with a new exhaust muffler and bypass valve map, creating a very distinctive and highly vocal exhaust note.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage S is instantly recognisable as a true Aston Martin, characterised by its purposeful stance conveying its agility and performance capability. From the front, a new lower front bumper finished in perfectly-aligned carbon fibre houses a larger air intake feeding the engine and front brakes. The splitter combined with the extended deck lid 'flip' work in harmony to provide increased down force at speed. New 19 inch 'V' spoke wheel styles are available as standard, while an optional 10-spoke lightweight forged wheel option, reduces unsprung mass further. A new rear bumper and side sills optically widen the car.

Bridging the gap between road car and race car, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S is heavily influenced by the 2011 Vantage GT4 race car. The GT4 takes advantage of the Vantage's immensely rigid bonded aluminium chassis, providing the ideal platform for a race car. Minor racing safety modifications including an FIA approved roll cage and racing 'bag' petrol tank along with weight saving measures are made to the standard road car to convert it into a class winning race car. In 2010, it won its class at the Dubai 24 Hours following this up with further endurance race wins at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, Silverstone 24 Hours and Spa 24 Hours. It also won its first major international championship victory in the European GT4 Cup.

Performance

The rationale behind the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S was to push the boundaries of the already acclaimed V8 Vantage with the highest levels of driver involvement possible. Aston Martin engineers set about enhancing nearly every dynamic element of the car to create a highly distinctive driving experience.

"With every new model we continue to evolve and enhance our VH architecture," said Aston Martin Product Development Director, Ian Minards. "The engineering team at Gaydon looked at every single performance attribute of the V8 Vantage, from engine and transmission to suspension, steering, brakes and tyres and considered what was required to make this car deserving of the coveted 'S' badge. The result is a pure driver-focussed package that, in both the coupe and Roadster form, exploits and emphasises the sporting nature of the iconic Vantage."

The 4.7 litre V8 engine has been modified to deliver peak power of 430 bhp (436 PS / 321 kW) at 7200 rpm and torque of 490 Nm (361 lb.ft) at 5000 rpm representing an increase of 10 bhp and 20 Nm respectively and is signified with a black engine plenum. The increase has been achieved through a valved air intake system and an aggressive spark strategy. The air intake system valve opens above 3500 rpm to allow more air to flow into the engine, which helps optimise performance at precisely the right part of the torque curve. Aggressive spark strategy uses sophisticated electronics to ignite the fuel in the engine at precisely the right time allowing it to run at its most powerful. It can also recognise higher octane fuel and extract the optimum performance from the increased rating.

The power and torque delivery on the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S is delivered at the most frequently used mid range engine speeds which creates tractable and effortless acceleration. Most demand for power and torque is in the mid-range which on the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S is where the greatest torque is delivered at 5000 rpm.

Sportshift™ II is an automated manual transmission featuring a new seven speed Graziano gearbox which is positioned at the back of the Aston Martin Vantage S on the transaxle contributing to 49:51 near perfect weight balance. The system benefits from a single manual clutch mated with electronic switching gear to change ratios and was designed from the ground-up exclusively for the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S. Aston Martin specifically chose to develop the SportshiftTM system owing to its inherent sporting benefits including mass saving, low complexity of moving parts, and real tangible gear changes. This contributes, along with other weight saving parts, to a total vehicle weight reduction of 30 kg.

Electro-hydraulic controls are actuated via two steering column mounted magnesium paddles allowing the driver to shift up or down. Quicker than a conventional manual system, and at least 50kg lighter than a dual clutch system, Sportshift™ II offers the inherent benefits of being able to drive in automatic mode as well as shifting manually. Sportshift™ II is 24kg lighter than Sportshift™ featured on the standard Vantage.

Sportshift™ II features seven ratios allowing the first six gears to sit closer together taking advantage of the engine's torque characteristic; this enhances the acceleration feel and gives the driver increased control. The seventh gear is a longer ratio delivering a quieter, more refined cruising gear for motorway stretches and also delivers increased fuel economy.

Driver interaction with SportshiftTM II is made as simple as possible to allow the driver to concentrate on the road ahead. Two magnesium paddles allow an up or a down shift through the gears. The controls are column-mounted so that the driver can always locate them with ease no matter what position the steering wheel is in.

As well as selecting gears manually with the paddle-shift, the driver is also able to select the 'D' button on the facia to engage automatic mode which acts like a traditional automatic gearbox changing gear at precisely the right time, making light work of urban, traffic and motorway driving.

The new seven speed automated manual is standard on the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S perfectly suiting the sporting nature of the car. Aston Martin has opted not to offer a manual transmission option owing to the high expected demand of Sportshift™ II.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage S' sporting character really comes into its own when the 'Sport' button on the facia is depressed giving the driver faster gear changes in both manual and automatic (a decrease of 60 milliseconds) and prevents the car changing up to the next gear when the revolution limit is reached. The default 'normal' provides a more progressive, throttle response, suited to more everyday situations, such as driving in urban areas, heavy traffic, or in challenging weather conditions. Selecting 'Sport' mode delivers a sharper throttle response together with a sportier exhaust note. This mode is designed for use in more dynamic driving situations where sharper responses are required, extracting the maximum performance from the car.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage S weighs 1610 kg, (coupe), 30 kg lighter than the standard Vantage owing to weight optimisation of the new Sportshift™ II transmission and use of carbon fibre. Air cooled, rather than oil cooled, the Sportshift™ II system takes advantage through the deletion of the oil pump and associated ancillaries saving 24 kg over the conventional six speed Sportshift™ system.

As with all Aston Martins, the Vantage S benefits from near perfect weight balance of 49:51 front to rear owing to the placement of the gearbox on the transaxle contributing to the excellent dynamics.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage S remains a practical day to day sports car featuring a 300 litre boot with convenient tail gate opening in coupe guise, while the Roadster has an automatically retracting fabric hood which can be operated up to 30 km/h.

The S variant features a unique exhaust muffler specifically tuned to aurally define its sporting intent. A revised map opens the bypass valves earlier in the rev range at 3500 rpm and even earlier in 'Sport' mode producing more crackle on the overrun.

Control

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage S bridges the gap between the V8 Vantage and the Vantage GT4 endurance race car offered by Aston Martin Racing. The standard components of the Vantage platform lend themselves perfectly to competition and produce a race-fit car with only minor modification. 2010 was the most successful year yet setting the Vantage as the benchmark GT4 competition car: it won its class at the Dubai 24 Hours following this up with further endurance race wins at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, Silverstone 24 Hours and the Spa 24 Hours. However, it was the car's first major international championship victory in the European GT4 Cup with Rhesus Racing that was the crowning of an excellent year for the car. In 2011, the Vantage GT4 was updated to take advantage of the increased aerodynamic benefits of the V12 Vantage and V8 Vantage S' body styling.

With knowledge from the track filtering into Aston Martin's road cars and the ease of driving them filtering onto the race track, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S benefits from having its handling characteristics honed by the marque's knowledgeable and talented engineers.

The steering rack has been modified with a ratio of 15:1 compared to 17:1 on the standard Vantage lowering the number of steering wheel turns lock-to-lock from 3.04 to 2.62. This results in greater precision and improved agility, response and fluidity of handling, and allows the driver to feel a closer connection to the car - delivering a more engaging and energetic drive.

An upgraded braking system plays a central role to the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S' dynamics, with a new larger diameter front brake disc, 380mm compared to 355mm on the V8 Vantage, six piston front calipers and a new generation of brake control module.

The front brakes are a racing-inspired floating disc design. The discs are made from two materials: cast iron and aluminium; the cast iron is bolted via a floating bobbin system to the aluminium bell. The technology provides dynamic advantages in the form of reduced unsprung mass with a brake that is lighter than a standard cast iron brake, has better thermal stability, improved cooling and produces a more consistent pedal feel. Despite the front disc being of a larger diameter, the weight of each disc has been reduced by 0.4 kg. The Vantage S also features a new brake 'booster' reducing pedal effort and travel.

The system features a new braking module delivering more discreet interventions and provides improved functionality for existing features such as ABS, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control (TC) and Positive Torque Control (PTC) as well as the new Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), which provides assistance in emergency braking situations. The Hydraulic Brake Assist function identifies when the driver requires maximum braking performance, from the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed, and automatically boosts the brake pressure up to the ABS control threshold for as long as the driver keeps the brake pedal pressed down. As a result, stopping distances can be substantially reduced.

The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system has been specifically tuned for the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S with emphasis on its sporting characteristics. A three-stage DSC system allows the driver to tailor the level of electronic intervention according to the type of driving. In default mode, the system is set to 'on' which will limit any tyre slip in difficult conditions, and provide the maximum amount of security possible without being intrusive. Holding the DSC button for four seconds will engage 'Track Mode' which delays the electronic intervention further, creating a safe yet purer experience. Depressing the button for a further five seconds will disengage the system completely.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage S sees the first introduction of the Hill Start Assist (HSA)function on an Aston Martin. If the driver applies the brakes to bring the car to a stop on a gradient, Hill Start Assist will hold the car stationary for up to two seconds to allow a smooth pull-away when the driver transfers their foot from brake to accelerator. HSA perfectly complements automated manual transmissions.

The suspension systems on the 'S' variant have been re-tuned to the more driver-focused nature of the car. The coupe features a revised rear spring coil rate and both body styles have retuned passive damper valves and revised bump stop rates and lengths. This results in greater levels of traction and stability, with the wheels maintaining better contact with the ground.

The Aston Martin engineers worked closely with Bridgestone during the development programme to create a bespoke tyre which has been optimised for the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S. The Bridgestone Potenza RE050s are 10mm wider at the front and rear than the standard Vantage to ensure supreme levels of grip.

Design

The Vantage has established itself as one of the world's most beautiful cars; distinctively Aston Martin, elegant yet with controlled aggression and perfectly proportioned with a low purposeful stance. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage S capitalises on the beauty of the Vantage and fuses it with the taut design cues from the V12 Vantage which hint at the car's heightened performance potential.

Aston Martin Design Director, Marek Reichman said: "We have sent the V8 Vantage to the gym to give the 'S' more definition and muscularity resulting in a more toned form.

"It is the perfect machine with an aesthetic that is borne out of functionality and aerodynamics conveying its focussed nature. The whole car sits in tension while the interior remains beautifully hand crafted conveying excitement of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S from within."

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage S' styling largely follows form to provide a shape that caters for the additional needs of the 'S' performance variant. From the front, the hand-laid carbon fibre front splitter creates a ground hugging stance hinting at its agility while also providing an increased area to provide the engine and brakes with more air. The splitter works in conjunction with the more pronounced rear deck lid 'flip' to create increased down force at speed. From the side, the wider profile sills which are derived from the GT4 race-car programme, contribute to reduced rear lift, and therefore improved high speed stability, by preventing the air which flows along the side of the car from spilling underneath the car.

The rear bumper accentuates the powerful attitude and rear proportions of the car. On the coupe, the deck lid incorporates a more pronounced 'flip' which contributes to high speed stability by reducing rear lift.

The rear bumper features a hand-made carbon fibre diffuser aiding the flow of air exiting from the underside of the car to maintain an area of low pressure at the rear of the car which helps to reduce lift and improve high speed stability.

The new 19-inch standard wheels are unique to the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S and feature a 'V' spoke design with a diamond turned finish providing a further clear differentiation to the standard car. An optional forged aluminium wheel is available saving half a kilo per wheel in unsprung mass improving comfort and handling further.

Complimenting the taut exterior, the tailored Vantage S' interior hints at the car's dynamic capabilities, defined by a distinctive three-track stitch detail on the inside of the doors and on the seats. A new folded leather design runs along the new stitched tracks echoing the gills of a shark hinting at the power and agility of the Vantage S.

The optional carbon fibre and Kevlar® composite seats cosset the driver providing support during spirited driving while remaining comfortable on long journeys. Saving 17 kg per car, the seats which are manufactured by a supplier to the motorsport and aviation industries are hand-trimmed by craftsmen and women at the Gaydon production facility.

Customers are able to specify an Obsidian Black full leather or Alcantara trimmed steering wheel with a contrasting (leather only) or matching stitch. Unique to the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S is the option to specify the Piano Black Interior Pack option which includes a Piano Black facia, centre console and surround door grabs and handles.

Both the Vantage S coupe and Roadster are hand built at Aston Martin's global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire alongside the V8 Vantage and V12 Vantage. Each Aston Martin V8 Vantage S takes in excess of 185 man-hours to build including 50 man-hours to paint and 70 man-hours to hand trim the interior. Each car undergoes meticulous attention to detail in not only the build phase but quality control and handover processes too.

2011 Mazda MX-5 GT Race Car


Mazda is set to challenge Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus, and BMW on the race track with its lightweight Mazda MX-5 GT entry in the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship 2011.

Weighing in at just 850kg, the Mazda MX-5 GT race car will accelerate from 0-to-60mph in just three seconds and hit a top speed of 160mph. The build of the car has been an engineering challenge to get the weight as low as possible using Mazda's gram strategy as the inspiration. Jota Sport examined every nut and bolt to reduce component weight and then match the power to the weight to give the lightest and most powerful MX-5 ever built.

An important aspect of the build was to ensure the Mazda MX-5 still remains true to its roots: great handling, huge fun-to-drive and the ability to challenge bigger more powerful competition, but at an affordable cost. The Mazda GT car ticks all those boxes and is now set to demonstrate its challenger spirit on the track.

Jota Sport, the race engineering team that will run the cars in the 2011 series, took 400 hours to build the shell to a specification that ensured it was 17 times stronger than required by the FIA. During the development they faced a number of engineering challenges such as suspension adjustments, integrating the six speed sequential gearbox, and lowering the engine. Weight saving strategies such as, the removal of interior components, reducing component weight and dipping the shell in acid lost 15kg from the MX-5 race car.The completed Mazda MX-5 GT features a modified Mazda engine to produce 275bhp, a six speed sequential paddle shift gearbox, carbon doors and Polycarbonate windows. On the exterior, the Mazda MX-5 GT boasts a Spirited Green metallic body colour - a first on the MX-5 for Mazda UK - complimented by Jota Sport corporate coloured liveries in orange and grey.

Mazda is renowned for challenging conventions so the motivation to develop a Mazda MX-5 GT car comes naturally. It also comes at a time when Mazda has recently celebrated a number of milestones for MX-5 including its 21st anniversary and producing 900,000 MX-5 units globally since its introduction in 1989, with over 10 percent of global MX-5 sales from Britain. Meanwhile, the Mazda MX-5 continues to hold the Guinness World Record as the world's best‑selling roadster - testament to its continued popularity with British open top sports car fans.

The Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship is contested over nine races from March to November including a race at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. The first race is a three hour endurance race at Silverstone next weekend, Saturday 26 March 2011, starting at 3.00pm.

This is the fourth time that Mazda has entered Britcar and this year the Mazda MX-5 GT car will be driven by two Mazda works drivers including experienced Mazda racing driver Mark Ticehurst, 39 from Hassocks, West Sussex and Auto Express journalist and racing driver Owen Mildenhall.

"The MX-5 production race car's modest power output, bullet proof reliability and nimble handling demonstrated last year how the MX-5 can be competitive against some of the purpose-built Lotus, VW and BMW race cars. With a higher power output combined with the durability, reliability and handling attributes that the MX-5 is renowned for; the Mazda MX-5 GT race car will be strong contender against the more powerful race cars in its class," comments Graeme Fudge, PR Director, Mazda UK.

The Mazda MX-5 GT car, prepared by Tunbridge Wells-based Jota Sport features the mandatory FIA approved safety equipment including a roll cage, race seats and harness, external electric cut-off and fire extinguisher, safety catches on the bonnet and boot lids, competition steering wheel and alloy wheels, while the running gear, rear axle, gearbox and engine have been modified to enhance performance.

2011 Chevrolet Colorado Concept


The Chevrolet Colorado Concept was revealed in advance of the 2011 Bangkok International Auto Show, where it is making its global public debut. The concept previews the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup truck, which will build on Chevrolet's strong truck DNA and award-winning heritage. The Chevrolet Colorado goes on sale in Thailand later this year.

"Thailand is the world's-largest market for midsize pickups, so this was the perfect location in which to unveil our new Colorado," said Susan Docherty, vice president, GMIO Sales, Marketing and Aftersales. "Trucks have been part of Chevrolet's core for nearly all of its 100-year history. The Chevrolet Colorado reinforces that heritage with expressive design, refinement and uncompromising capability."

The show truck features an extended-cab body atop a high-stance AWD chassis and rides on large, 20-inch wheels and off-road tires. Power comes from an efficient 2.8L turbo-diesel engine, which produces a broad torque band for excellent cargo and towing capability.

"Although this is a show vehicle, the basic proportions and form convey the vision for the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado that we will bring to market," said Brad Merkel, GM's global vehicle line executive. "It reflects a stylized version of the new truck, one that takes into account rugged dependable truck capabilities for commercial use as well as sophisticated refinement for personal-use needs."

While the new Chevrolet Colorado was developed within GM's global product development organization, engineers took careful steps to ensure it would meet local market needs. Roberto Rempel, GM's global vehicle chief engineer, lived in Thailand for several months during the truck's development, immersing himself in the market and observing how the Thai people use their trucks and the road conditions they experience."Pickups are instrumental in the vibrant Thai economy and owners take great pride in their trucks, which are used for both work and personal driving," he said. "These customers ask a lot of their trucks, so the powertrains and chassis must be very robust to earn their trust - and that's exactly what we've delivered."

Design details

The Chevrolet Colorado Concept's purposeful design conveys strength through bodywork that appears tightly wrapped over the chassis and a wide, confident stance. In the front, Chevrolet's internationally recognized gold bowtie and dual-port grille are framed by large headlamps that flow into the front fenders, and an extractor vent on the hood.

"Around the globe, pickup trucks are associated with strength, capability and function - and that's exactly what the Chevrolet Colorado show truck embodies," said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of Global Design. "Its broad-shouldered proportions are derived from nearly a century of Chevrolet truck heritage."

Pepperdust Metallic exterior paint is accented with polished aluminum details in the fascias, as well as integrated side steps and black-masked projector-style headlamps with LED lighting elements. At the rear is a full-width LED-lit taillamp, which creates a striking appearance when illuminated.

Additional exterior details include:

A streamlined "cab collar" design with a body-color hard tonneau cover on the bed
Gray accents on the side, front and rear lower moldings
20-inch aluminum wheels featuring a "liquid metal" finish, with Stone Gray color wheel ports

Inside, there's another signature Chevrolet cue: a dual-cockpit instrument panel design. It flows into the doors, with continuous lines that create a floating, wraparound effect, amplifying the Chevrolet Colorado's feeling of spaciousness. Ice-blue lighting and high-quality, "double-faced" leather-trimmed seats add sophistication and refinement.

"The interior is designed to deliver a premium and inviting environment, with a greater feeling of spaciousness than is typically found in midsize trucks," said Welburn. "There's also great attention to detail in the execution of the features you see and feel."

A brace of motorcycle-inspired, three-dimensional gauges stand out on the instrument panel, projecting a sporty appearance.

Contrasting trim used with the light-colored leather seating, dark wood trim accented with chrome and low-gloss and soft-touch materials are used throughout for a premium feel. A number of storage compartments are located throughout the interior, including a covered center bin for concealment of valuable items, and a large, dual glovebox.

Additional features include a dual-zone, digital climate control system and the latest in "infotainment" technology. The show truck highlights an ergonomically positioned 7-inch LCD display in the center stack, for easy viewing and intuitive control of Web access, navigation, music and hands-free phone features.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe


In the shape of the new Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé, Mercedes-AMG is presenting an autonomous, high-performance car that appeals to all the senses. Distinctive design is combined with a powerful drive package and dynamic handling. The new coupé joins the successful C-Class AMG family, which includes the classic saloon as well as the practical estate model. The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé also enhances the AMG family of coupés: in addition to the CLS63 AMG and the CL63 AMG, Mercedes-AMG GmbH is now able to offer another dream car featuring a high-performance eight-cylinder engine. The market launch commences in July 2011. Looking particularly attractive is the "Edition 1" of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé, available from launch with exclusive equipment.

The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine in the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé delivers a maximum output of 336 kW (457 hp) and peak torque of 600 Newton metres for outstanding performance: the coupé is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and the top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). With this kind of specification, the new two-door vehicle is set to take the lead in its segment.The new coupé variant benefits from all the technology updates that have been adopted on the C63 AMG saloon and estate models. Deploying the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with "Controlled Efficiency" mode as standard and a new power steering pump reduces fuel consumption: the combined NEDC figure for the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé is 12.0 l/100 km.

AMG performance package for a maximum output of 358 kW (487 hp)

This fuel consumption figure also applies to the performance version generating 358 kW (487 hp) courtesy of the AMG performance package. Available as an option, this package improves acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h to 4.4 seconds, with technology transferred from the SLS AMG responsible for the 22 kW (30 hp) increase in output. The forged pistons, connecting rods and lightweight crankshaft adopted from the gull-wing model's high-tech drive system save three kilograms in weight. This reduces inertia and enhances the agility and responsiveness of the high-revving, eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. Visually, the AMG performance package can be identified by the variable intake manifold in titanium grey under the bonnet, the AMG high-performance braking system with composite front discs and red painted brake callipers all round, the carbon fibre spoiler lip on the boot lid and the AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather with an Alcantara® grip area.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission as standard

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission provides direct and dynamic power delivery. Rather than using a torque converter, it has a compact, wet start-off clutch which reduces the losses associated with a conventional automatic transmission and thereby significantly lowers fuel consumption. Another major factor is the Controlled Efficiency "C" mode: by providing early, comfortable upshifts while maintaining the lowest possible engine speed and "soft" accelerator characteristics, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission helps the driver achieve better fuel economy figures.

The exclusive Mercedes-AMG power transmission is compelling because it offers a high level of variability and inspiring dynamism. The "S", "S+" and "M" modes deliver increased agility and are selected via the new rotary control established on the SLS AMG. Faster gear changes and higher revs add to the driver's emotional experience and double-declutching is active in "S", "S+" and "M" modes, boosting enjoyment further. Gear changes in the "S+" and "M" modes take just 100 milliseconds. The RACE START function allows the driver to explore the vehicle's full acceleration capability.

Specific AMG sports suspension for great dynamism and ride comfort

It is not just the engine and power transmission which influence the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé's dynamic quality - the AMG sports suspension and AMG high-performance braking system are also key here. Departing from the standard suspension, the top-of-the-range AMG model has a separate three-link front suspension, a reinforced multi-link independent rear suspension and a wider track all round. The stiffer elastokinematics, the autonomous axle kinematics with more negative camber all round and anti-roll bars with a larger cross-section result in higher agility and greater lateral acceleration. Specially adjusted spring and damper rates have optimised both the responsiveness of the suspension as well as the road roar and tyre vibration characteristics.

The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a direct ratio (13.5 : 1) affords excellent road feel and contributes to the agile, direct driving experience. This is complemented perfectly by three-stage ESP®: the Electronic Stability Program enables three individual control strategies to be accessed at the touch of a button. The driver can use the ESP® switch on the centre console to choose between ESP ON, ESP SPORT and ESP OFF modes. The AMG high-performance braking system with internally ventilated and perforated discs all-round ensures outstanding responsiveness, short stopping distances and high resistance to fading.

Confident and athletic: the design of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé

Visually, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé has a confident, athletic presence that is reminiscent of the high-performance SL63 AMG roadster. All AMG-specific design features have been skilfully combined with classic coupé proportions. This compact two-door car has an exciting low profile, powerful shoulderline and a narrow C-pillar. Other key styling aspects are the short overhang, long bonnet, steeply raked windscreen and long, stretched out roof.

As is typical for AMG, the car has a striking, arrow-shaped front section with the new AMG front apron including a lower cross strut painted in high-gloss black, AMG-specific LED daytime running lights and side air outlets. The large Mercedes star sits on a wing-shaped transverse louvre in the new radiator grille and, in conjunction with the modified aluminium bonnet with its powerdomes, underlines the impression of masculinity that the car exudes. Another eye-catching feature is the new clear-lens headlamps, especially when the optional Intelligent Light System (ILS) is also specified.

The wide front wing bearing the "6.3 AMG" legend, AMG side sill panels and the new 5-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-gloss finish dominate the side view. Good contact with the road is provided by the wide 235/40 R 18 (front) and 255/35 R 18 (rear) tyres.

At the rear, the unique AMG rear apron has a distinctive, black diffuser insert and three pronounced diffuser fins. The two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system also attract attention.

High-quality, dynamic interior

On opening the door of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé, passengers enter a specially designed, dynamic interior of quality. The dashboard instrument panel with integrated screen immediately recalls the new CLS63 AMG. Three sporty, separate round instruments provide information on speed, engine rpm, fuel level and coolant temperature. Other display options are incorporated into the AMG main menu. This can be accessed via the multifunctional buttons on the steering wheel. Located in the middle of the speedometer, the colour, three-dimensional TFT display welcomes the driver by showing an AMG logo when the ignition is switched on.

The specially shaped AMG performance steering wheel has been adopted from the CLS63 AMG. It has flattened top and bottom sections, a metallic trim element, grip areas which are trimmed in perforated leather, and aluminium shift paddles. Trim elements in high-gloss, black piano lacquer on the dashboard instrument panel, centre console and doors emphasise high quality. Situated on the centre console is the rotary control for selecting the C, S, S+, M transmission modes and RACE START.

The new AMG sports seats with integral head restraints, EASY-ENTRY system and high-quality AMG badges have a sporty design with horizontal seamlines. Combined ARTICO/DINAMICA black upholstery comes as standard. DINAMICA is a new type of breathable man-made fibre which is pleasant to the touch and is characterised by low emissions and a high degree of lightfastness. The side bolsters of the AMG sports seats are covered in ARTICO while the centre panels of the seat cushions are upholstered with DINAMICA. The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé is a fully fledged four-seater with the rear seats featuring the same style of horizontal seamlines as the AMG sports seats. To enlarge the luggage compartment, the backrests in the rear can each be folded down as standard.

Available as an option, designo leather appointments give the interior a particularly exclusive character: four single colours and three two-tone combinations are available. These can also be complemented with "extended black designo leather appointments" for the top section of the dashboard.

With seven airbags as standard, belt tensioners and belt-force limiters for all seats, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé has extensive safety features. The airbags, which can deploy in milliseconds in the event of an accident, include front airbags and sidebags for the driver and front passenger, a kneebag on the driver's side, and windowbags. The side protection system - comprising windowbag and sidebag - optimises the level of protection afforded to individual parts of the body.

With a number of driving assistance systems ranging from ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection to DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé provides a comprehensive level of driver support and protection. The assistance systems are familiar from the flagship S-Class and are based on the latest radar, camera and sensor technology. The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupé also features a new telematics generation which received its global premiere on the saloon and estate models. Major new features include greater operating convenience, larger displays, phone book transfer, display of SMS messages, wireless music reproduction via Bluetooth and a USB interface now accommodated in the centre armrest.

The multimedia system COMAND Online now provides internet access for the first time. When the car is stationary, customers are able to browse freely or surf to a Mercedes-Benz Online service whose pages load particularly rapidly and are also easy to use while on the move. The integrated services include weather information and a special destination search via Google, as well as the option of downloading a route that has been previously configured on a PC using Google Maps and sent to the car. The navigation system of COMAND Online also has added functions. New features include a 3D display with plastic city views. Also new: routes covered can be recorded and repeated later, specific personal destinations can be saved or imported via an SD card and four alternative routes can be displayed on the navigation map, one of them a particularly economical variation.

The Becker® MAP PILOT makes a low-cost navigation function, which can also be retrofitted, available for the entry-level Audio 20 CD radio. Its advantages over aftermarket solutions include integrated operation via the central controls and the Audio 20 display, a concealed location in the glove compartment and updating via an internet portal.

Specially designed, premium quality "Edition 1"

As for the CLS63 AMG, an "Edition 1" of the new C63 AMG coupé is also available. The Edition 1 features exciting, premium quality interior details that have been specially designed: the AMG sports seats, door centre panels and armrests come in black designo leather with contrasting porcelain seams on the sports seats. To match this, the trim parts have a porcelain piano-lacquer look and the two-tone AMG performance steering wheel sets black nappa leather off with a lower section in porcelain designo leather. An "Edition 1" badge on the trim indicates this version's singularity. AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in matt black make the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupé Edition 1 look equally special on the outside. As an option, the standard metallic paintwork can be swapped for a matt finish in designo magno night black or diamond white metallic BRIGHT.

2011 Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0


Porsche AG will enter the Nürburgring 24 hour race on June 25, 2011, with a more advanced version of the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid. The priority for this latest edition was improvement of efficiency through the targeted optimization of hybrid components, which also resulted in a 20 percent weight reduction. Version 2.0 of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid is intended to achieve the same lap times as its predecessor but with less fuel consumption.

The general layout of the hybrid was adopted from the previous model. A portal axle with two electric motors drives the front wheels and supplements the four-liter - depending on the balance of performance classification - approximately 470 hp, six-cylinder boxer engine at the rear. The output of both electric motors has increased from 60 to 75 kilowatts each. For bursts of multiple seconds at a time, drivers now have almost an additional 200 hp at their disposal with the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0. Depending on the programming, this power is automatically activated through use of the throttle pedal. Moreover, pilots can manually call up this extra power, for instance when overtaking.

The electric flywheel accumulator, with its rotor spinning up to 40,000 rpm and storing energy mechanically as rotational energy, is now housed with the other hybrid components in a carbon fiber safety cell on the passenger's side.

At first glance, the new GT3 R Hybrid is clearly distinguishable from the previous model. Thanks to the optimization of the hybrid system's high voltage components, the large louvers in front of the rear fenders were no longer necessary. This reduces drag and also lowers fuel consumption. All in all, the weight of the vehicle decreased from 1,350 to 1,300 kilograms.

"We've collected a great deal of information from our races on the Nürburgring, at the ALMS race at Road Atlanta, as well as from the ILMC race on China's Zhuhai circuit. The data was invaluable for the further development of our racing laboratory," says Hartmut Kristen, head of Porsche motorsport. "The emphasis of our work was on improving efficiency. That means we want to keep the lap times consistent with 2010 but use less energy, hence less fuel. In this way, we support future developments of road-going, sporting hybrid vehicles."

The cockpit of the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid has also been completely revised. Most of the displays and controls have moved to the steering wheel. Drivers can operate the rest of the functions via backlit buttons now situated on the centre console. Priority was placed on the ergonomics and the clear layout for pilots - particularly in darkness.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid is a perfect example of the 'Porsche Intelligent Performance' philosophy, a principle found in every Porsche - more power on less fuel, more efficiency and lower CO2 emissions - on the race track and on the road.

2011 BMW 1-Series M Coupe MotoGP Safety Car


The motorcycle road racing world championship - or MotoGP - ranks among the world's most popular and spectacular sporting events. The involvement of BMW M GmbH in motorcycle racing's top-echelon event now enters its 13th year. To ensure the safety of the practice runs and the race itself, BMW M GmbH is providing the official Safety Car along with a raft of other high-performance vehicles for use by the Dorna Sports management team and IRTA officials.

At the curtain raiser on 19th March 2011, the BMW 1-Series M Coupe will for the first time be deployed as the official Safety Car for the MotoGP events - in advance of its market launch late in April. The BMW Safety Car is a one-off built by BMW M GmbH specifically for this race series. Only the 250 kW/340 hp straight-six M TwinPower Turbo engine and the entire drivetrain were taken over unchanged from the production model.

In the interests of weight optimisation, the BMW Safety Car comes with a carbon fibre-reinforced bonnet featuring additional large air vents, as well as polycarbonate side and rear windows. A special lightweight titanium race exhaust system not only saves weight but also delivers a captivating sound for the benefit of the spectators. Complementing the discreet spoiler lip on the boot lid there is now an adjustable rear wing to provide the requisite downforce. On the Safety Car the aerodynamically honed front apron with its precisely defined air ducting, including Air Curtains, features an additional splitter integrated on the underside of the apron.The interior of the BMW Safety Car is a model of uncompromising purism. A rollover cage bolted behind the B-pillar, the absence of rear seats, two racing bucket seats with 6-point safety belts, an M steering wheel in alcantara and a fire extinguisher are all standard in the Safety Car.

The suspension technology of the BMW 1-Series M Coupe was specially adapted for the Safety Car. Its high-performance suspension system boasts an adjustable race track set-up that includes a sports-tuned chassis in which the dampers are independently adjustable for bump and rebound. The BMW Safety Car runs on 19-inch mixed tyres measuring 255/35 at the front and 285/30 at the rear. Vehicle height is variably selectable and the camber of the front and rear axle can be altered to suit the circuit topography. The braking system of the BMW 1-Series M Coupe, already designed for extremely high demands, is replaced in the Safety Car with a six-piston fixed-calliper racing brake system.

The deployment of the brand-new BMW 1-Series M Coupe Safety Car marks the continuation of BMW M GmbH's successful partnership - begun in 1999 - with Dorna Sports, the organisers of the MotoGP World Championship. With a fleet of eight vehicles, BMW is supporting the safe running of the motorcycle world championship in the current race season. As well as the official BMW 1-Series M Coupe Safety Car, this year sees two further reserve Safety Cars from BMW M GmbH present at the track: a BMW X6 M and a BMW M3. In addition, the organising team has been given a BMW X5 M for the Safety Officer and a BMW ActiveHybrid X6 for the stewards. On call this season as a Medical Car is a BMW 535i Touring. There will also be two Safety Bikes contributing to the safe running of race weekends: a BMW S 1000 RR and a BMW HP2 Sport. The ceremonial handover of the vehicles took place at BMW M in Garching-Hochbrück on 28th February 2011. It was on this occasion that Dr Kay Segler, Director of BMW M GmbH, and Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO Dorna Sports, made an advance announcement that the successful partnership would be extended until 2016, before sealing the agreement in a signing ceremony.

2012 BMW 6-Series Coupe


The hearts of sports car aficionados with an eye for beauty and a thirst for luxury and innovative technology will beat a little faster with the arrival of the new BMW 6-Series Coupe. The third generation of the top-class Coupe sees premium carmaker BMW adding another intoxicating chapter to its decades-long tradition in the production of exclusive dream cars. The new BMW 6-Series Coupe impresses with its irresistible design and inspires with even sharper driving dynamics than its predecessor, noticeably optimised comfort levels and extra space. This is the only car in the segment to offer the combination of top-class sporting ability, exclusive touring comfort and a 460-litre (16.24 cu. ft) luggage space. Also on board to deliver the BMW 6-Series Coupe's signature driving experience are a range of innovative driver assistance systems and BMW ConnectedDrive infotainment features. The new car therefore meets the highest - not to mention the broadest - expectations of driving pleasure in a large, premium 2+2-seater in incomparable style.

Its unmistakable design language gives the new BMW 6-Series Coupe an aura of athletic elegance. The sweeping bonnet, short front overhang and set-back passenger compartment team up with a 74-millimetre increase in body length (4,894 mm) over its predecessor and a 75-millimetre longer wheelbase (2,855 mm) to create the hallmark proportions of a BMW Coupe. Meanwhile, the extra width of the new car - it is now 39 millimetres wider (at 1,894 mm) thanks to its increased track width - makes for an exceptionally powerful stance that emphasises its impressive roadholding. All of which ensures that observers are struck by the car's dynamic forward-surging presence and promise of majestic driving ability the moment they set eyes on it. The faithful reflection of the car's character in its exterior styling is given particular appeal by the lines running along the full length of the body and its harmoniously curved surfaces. The inspiration for these design features was the natural movement of waves. In the same way as water is parted by an object in flowing water, the car body's shaping lines fan out from the BMW badge on the bonnet to both sides of the body.BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with petrol direct injection provides both sporty power development and exceptional efficiency in the engines available for the new BMW 6-Series Coupe from launch. In the new BMW 650i Coupe, a V8 powerplant with turbochargers positioned between the cylinder banks develops maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp. An exclusive feature of the 235 kW/320 hp six-cylinder in-line engine in the new BMW 640i Coupe, meanwhile, is the addition of VALVETRONIC variable valve control. Both units are hooked up to an eight-speed Sports automatic gearbox as standard. Also part of the standard specification is an extensive range of BMW EfficientDynamics technology, including the Auto Start-Stop function and ECO PRO mode (in the BMW 640i Coupe).

The new BMW 6-Series Coupe strikes an ideal balance between dynamic handling and ride comfort thanks to a newly developed chassis. Its standard Electric Power Steering and optional Integral Active Steering both break new ground in this segment. Also on the options list are Dynamic Damper Control and the Adaptive Drive system, complete with roll stabilisation. Drive Dynamic Control - which allows drivers to adjust the car's set-up to their individual tastes - comes as standard in the new BMW 6-Series Coupe.

The innovations in the new BMW 6-Series Coupe also extend to light technology, in the shape of Adaptive LED Headlights. Their bright white light provides an extremely intense and evenly spread illumination of the road. This technology is unparalleled in the segment and also allows the beam of the headlights to follow the progression of corners. Customers can also order their Coupe with optional LED foglamps.

Other features that set the new car apart from its rivals are the BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems and mobility services. The rear-view camera, Surround View, Parking Assistant, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Speed Limit Info, Lane Departure Warning System and Lane Change Warning System are joined on the list of available equipment items by the new generation of the BMW Head-Up-Display. The latest incarnation of the system uses a full spectrum of colours to display the information projected onto the windscreen. The BMW iDrive control system, meanwhile, is included as standard in the BMW 6-Series Coupe as an operating portal for the navigation, communications and infotainment functions. Its Control Display comes in the form of a fixed, freestanding flatscreen, which adds an extra exclusive flourish to the generously sized and luxurious interior. Elsewhere, the optional Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System lays on a feast of aural pleasure seldom experienced inside a car.

The design: commanding presence and athletic elegance.

The new BMW 6-Series Coupe heralds the arrival of an exceptionally sporty and exclusive 2+2-seater in the premium segment of top-class Coupes. The new model's extra length and width over its predecessor model combine with its 5-millimetre lower height to produce a strikingly low-set and powerful design. The new interpretation of the traditional BMW Coupe proportions is embellished by lines and surfaces inspired by the movement of waves. Flowing lines and harmonious curves create a feeling of athletic grace, complemented by extremely classy and eye-catching design features which underline the opulent character and elegant appearance of the two-door BMW.

The expressive front end is dominated by the large and slightly forward-slanting BMW kidney grille. The grille emphasises the car's sporting pedigree with a broad, flat design, and creates a visual connection with the engine nestling behind. The kidney grille slats, angled slightly towards the top, lend additional emphasis to the front end's "shark nose" character. The contour lines of the bonnet converge towards the kidney grille, forming a V-shape which is continued by the contours of the headlights, kidney and wide air intake to give a road-focused look. High-quality chrome elements and the LED units of the optional foglamps positioned in front of them guide the eye to the muscular wheel arches.

High-visibility innovation: Adaptive LED Headlights.

The new BMW 6-Series Coupe is equipped with bi-xenon headlights as standard. An accentuating trim element cuts across the top of the hallmark BMW twin round headlights to produce the intent look familiar from other BMW models. The optional Adaptive LED Headlights provide a fresh take on this established feature. The Adaptive LED Headlights for low beam and high beam contain LED light rings for the parking lights and daytime running lights, which are levelled off at the lower edge and overlapped at their top edge by an accent light - also featuring LEDs. The result is a stunning, distinctively BMW showcase for the innovative light technology below the surface. In addition, they also generate the low beam and high beam light from the two light rings. The light sources here are horizontal LED ribs positioned in the centre of the light rings. The brand's hallmark twin round headlight look is therefore expressed even more strikingly not only with the daytime running lights switched on, but also when the headlights are activated in the dark.

However, the Adaptive LED Headlights are about more than just looking good; they also ensure the driver can see well. Their bright white light provides an intense and even illumination of the road ahead. From a colour perspective, the light comes much closer to natural daylight than that created by conventional halogen or xenon headlights, lending even reflective objects far greater contrast. The cornering element of the Adaptive LED Headlights is also tailored to the car's speed, steering angle and yaw rate, allowing the pivot of the headlights to adapt automatically to the line of the corner. Meanwhile, a light source positioned specially in the headlight housing generates the cornering light which, at low speeds, ensures illumination of the road surface in the direction the car is turning. LED technology is also deployed for the direction indicators, each of which consists of eight LED units arranged in a row underneath the light rings. As well as enhancing visibility in the dark, the Adaptive LED Headlights thus also significantly improve the signalling effect of the car's lights.

Side view: elegant roofline, powerfully curved surfaces.

Tightly curved surfaces and character lines stretching the full length of the body define the side view of the BMW 6-Series Coupe. The forward-slanting BMW kidney grille is particularly clear from this angle. Despite its smooth curves and innovative pedestrian protection measures, the long bonnet still has a flat appearance. Its contour lines fan out wide and extend towards the rear. In combination with the car's typical Coupe proportions, this creates a particularly elegant, elongated silhouette.

The exterior design has been inspired by waves with clearly defined lines and volume formed around an object in flowing water. This gives the new BMW 6-Series Coupe a naturally powerful and sporty edge. The typical BMW swage line extends out from behind the front wheel arch, takes in the sporty gill feature and extends dynamically along the flank of the car to the rear. In so doing, it stretches the new BMW 6-Series Coupe visually and lends it a dynamic yet elegant allure. The door handles are integrated precisely into the swage line. A further character line emerges from the swell of the front wheel arch, before dropping down between the gill and the door and then levelling out towards the rear, its path replicating a forward-surging wave. The door sill line underneath it and an additional crease give the lower edge of the body a light and sporty appearance.

The roofline of the new BMW 6-Series Coupe also swoops in an elegant, flat progression into the tail. It comes across as especially svelte when viewed from the side, creating a contrast typical of BMW Coupes between the powerful body and light passenger compartment. Doors with frameless windows underline this impression. The chromed side window border emphasises the "counter-swing" at the foot of the C-pillar (known as the Hofmeister kink) with its particularly tight line.

Rear view: striking indications of dynamic and secure roadholding.

From the rear, the new BMW 6-Series Coupe exudes power, athleticism and solidity. Bulging wheel arches accentuate the wide track of the new car, offering a hint of its impressive roadholding. Added to which, horizontal lines and the broadening impression of the car's shape as you follow it towards the rear paint a clear picture of the sporting performance waiting to be unlocked. The slightly concave lower section of the boot lid generates light and shade effects which lend an extra lightness to the rear of the car. The edges of the boot lid and the licence plate surround create a V-shape, which - similarly to the front of the car - steers the eye towards the road. The exhaust tailpipes are positioned on either side of a diffusor-style apron. On the BMW 650i Coupe they are trapezoidal in shape while on the BMW 640i Coupe they are circular.

The two-part rear light clusters display the customary BMW L-shape in a particularly wide rendition that extends far into the boot lid, while the swage line that flows into the rear lights forges a harmonious link between the side and the rear of the car. Inside the rear light clusters, two LED-powered light strips generate the familiar BMW night-time look, an effect that is reinforced by the L-shaped lower light unit. The direction indicators and brake lights are also LED-powered. The wide additional brake light is located in the upper edge of the boot lid.

Interior: driver-oriented cockpit, exclusive ambience.

The driver-oriented cockpit layout familiar from BMW models down the years and a dynamic forward-surging movement define the design of the interior. The centre section of the instrument panel - including the Control Display, the central air vent and the controls for the audio system and climate control - is angled slightly towards the driver. The gearshift lever is located on a surface that opens out towards the driver and is set lower than the front passenger side of the centre console. This structure is repeated in the central section of the instrument panel, further enhancing the driver-focused feel. The fluent transition between the centre console and instrument panel can be accentuated with optional stitching in contrasting colour for the leather surfaces.

The horizontal structuring of the instrument panel is accentuated by an electroplated strip on the driver's side of the cabin. This is extended into the front-passenger side in the form of a subtle crease in the glove compartment. Meanwhile, powerfully taut waistline surfaces - which are carried forward into the instrument panel - embody the feeling of dynamic forward movement inside the cabin. The decorative surface of the instrument panel extends into the centre console with an elegant, slightly curving sweep to lend the front-passenger side an exclusive allure.

The rear seats also provide their passengers with a very pleasant level of touring comfort thanks to their individual-seat character and greater shoulder and elbowroom compared with the outgoing model. In addition, there is also more headroom for all the passengers, despite the reduced overall height of the car. The rear seat backrests can be specified as an option with a through-loading facility for a ski bag, allowing two pairs of skis to be transported in comfort. The luggage area can accommodate 460 litres (16.24 cu. ft) of luggage, which means that the BMW 6-Series Coupe can carry three 46-inch golf bags or two medium-sized hard-shell cases plus a flight case.

Optimised display, exclusive feel: instruments in black-panel technology, Control Display with flatscreen design.

The instrument cluster in black-panel technology combines state-of-the-art display technology with classic sports-car circular instruments. A high-resolution 9.2-inch display below the four dials includes the mileage counter, fuel consumption and Efficient Dynamics display, as well as feedback from the driver assistance systems and Check/Control messages. This black-panel technology, which made its debut in the BMW 7-Series, is also used for the climate control displays in the centre section of the instrument panel.

In addition to the Controller with direct menu control buttons positioned on the console centre, the standard-fitted iDrive operating system also comes with a new monitor in exclusive flatscreen design. This freestanding Control Display is located in a prominent and optimal position within the instrument panel, and creates the feeling of a powerboat cockpit rising up dynamically in front of the driver and front passenger. The central Control Display in the new BMW 6-Series Coupe has a 7-inch-diameter screen as standard. However, if the optional Navigation system Professional is specified, this is upgraded to a 10.2-inch version - the largest on-board monitor in the segment - bordered by a high-class electroplated chrome surround.

The exterior paintwork of the new BMW 6-Series Coupe can be ordered in a choice of eight metallic and two non-metallic shades, allowing customers to highlight both the sporting credentials of the Coupe and its modern and elegant character. The standard Dakota leather trim is available in three colour variants, the optional Exclusive Nappa leather in a choice of four shades. As an alternative to the standard Softskin surfacing, the instrument panel, door and side panels can be specified with Exclusive Nappa leather trim. Also, double French seams in a contrasting colour matching the seat covers can be ordered in place of the black French seams. The interior trim comes as standard in High-gloss Black, but can alternatively be ordered as an option in Brushed Aluminium, Poplar Grain Grey or American Oak high-gloss. Optional ceramic applications for the audio system and air conditioning controls, gearshift lever and iDrive Controller lend the interior an extra flourish.

The lightweight seats with integrated belt system developed for the new BMW 6-Series range are available in three variants. The integrated belt system makes it easier both to reach the belt and to climb into the rear of the car. The standard-fitted driver and front passenger seats boast electric adjustment for the seat height and fore/aft position, backrest angle and head restraint height - including memory function - as well as seat heating and an easy-entry function to facilitate access to the rear compartment.

The optional sports seats offer optimal lateral support with their raised seat and backrest sides, and come fitted with integrated head restraints as well as manually adjustable thigh support. Comfort seats are another option, adding comfort head restraints, lumbar support, and electric adjustment of the thigh support, backrest width and angle of the upper backrest segment. Offering an alternative to the standard Dakota leather upholstery is Exclusive Nappa leather with extended features. For the sports seats and comfort seats, there is the added option of active seat ventilation. Plus, comfort seats can also be specified with the active seat function.

All the seat variants available for the new BMW 6-Series Coupe come with crash-activated head restraints. The standard safety specification also includes front airbags, seat frame-mounted side airbags, side curtain head airbags for both rows of seats, three-point inertiareel seatbelts on all seats, belt force limiters and belt latch tensioners, as well as ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear. To optimise passive pedestrian protection, in some national markets the new BMW 6-Series Coupe is equipped with an active bonnet system; in the event of a collision with a pedestrian, a pyrotechnic actuator mechanism automatically raises the front and rear of the bonnet.

The new BMW 6-Series Coupe is fitted with robust load-path structures, precisely defined deformation zones and an extremely rigid safety passenger cell. These safety features ensure maximum occupant protection in all types of collision. Carefully targeted advances in the use of materials have increased the strength and lowered the weight of the body with the aim of enhancing both the safety and agility of the car. Indeed, the static torsional rigidity of the new Coupe is around 53 per cent greater than that of its predecessor. In the interests of weight optimisation, the doors, bonnet and front axle spring mounts are all aluminium, while the front side panels are made from plastic and the boot lid from glass fibre composite.

Top-class performance from eight or six cylinders: BMW TwinPower Turbo in the new BMW 6-Series Coupe.

One V8 and one six-cylinder in-line engine are available for the new BMW 6-Series Coupe from market launch, and both can claim unique features.

These power units are kitted out with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, including High Precision Injection petrol direct injection, and stand out with their instantaneous power development, majestic in-gear acceleration, outstanding refinement and exemplary efficiency for their output class.

The eight-cylinder power unit in the new BMW 650i Coupe produces maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp from its 4.4-litre displacement between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm. This unique engine, whose turbochargers are positioned in the V-shaped area between the cylinder banks, produces an instantaneous and sustained wave of power, making it a feast for the enthusiast driver. Peak torque of 600 Newton metres (443 lb-ft) is served up between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm. The sporting performance attributes of the V8 engine enable the new BMW 650i Coupe to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds, leaving the engine electronics to call a halt to proceedings at 250 km/h (155 mph). And yet the range-topping model also demonstrates extraordinary efficiency for this output class, recording average fuel consumption of 10.4 litres per 100 kilometres (27.2 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle, together with CO2 emissions of 243 grams per kilometre.

The new BMW 640i Coupe is powered by a six-cylinder in-line engine in which the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology brings both direct injection and VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control to the table. This combination optimises both the responsiveness and efficiency of the 3.0-litre powerplant, which generates maximum output of 235 kW/320 hp at 5,800 rpm and puts its peak torque of 450 Newton metres (332 lb-ft) on tap between 1,300 and 4,500 rpm. The BMW 640i Coupe completes the sprint from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds, and its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle stands at 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres (36.7 mpg imp), while CO2 emissions come in at 179 grams per kilometre.

Standard-fitted eight-speed Sports automatic gearbox with steering wheel shift paddles; BMW 640i Coupe with Auto Start-Stop function.

Both the BMW 650i Coupe and BMW 640i Coupe transfer their power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed Sports automatic gearbox. This standard-fitted unit enhances sporty driving with exceptionally rapid gear changes, offers outstanding shift comfort and also optimises the efficiency of both model variants.

The innovative gear set configuration of the compact, low-weight automatic allows it to offer eight gears and a correspondingly wide gear spread. This not only enhances the car's sprinting ability, but also supports economical driving at low revs. With its minimal converter slip and impressive inherent efficiency, the eight-speed Sports automatic helps to ensure efficient power transmission. And the driver can also change gear manually using the shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

Extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology also plays its part in cutting fuel consumption and emissions in the new BMW 6-Series Coupe. Among the systems fitted as standard are Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering (EPS), the on-demand operation of ancillary components, intelligent lightweight construction and low-rolling-resistance tyres. The new BMW 640i Coupe is also fitted with automatic active air flap control and the Auto Start-Stop function. When the driver draws to a standstill at junctions or in a traffic jam, the engine is automatically switched off to prevent unnecessary fuel consumption at idle. As soon as the driver releases the brake pedal, the engine starts up again. If the driver is using the Auto Hold function, the engine is restarted when the accelerator is depressed.

Another innovation also helps smooth the way to particularly low fuel consumption while on the move. A touch of the Drive Dynamic Control button allows BMW 640i Coupe drivers to activate ECO PRO mode and unlock additional efficiency-boosting potential. ECO PRO mode tweaks the engine management, the accelerator mapping and the shift characteristics of the automatic gearbox to favour a consciously relaxed and frugal driving style at low engine revs. At the same time, efficient power usage for electrically operated functions such as the climate control system and the seat and exterior mirror heating ensures extremely efficient in-car energy management. Special readouts in the instrument cluster and Control Display keep the driver informed on the levels of energy efficiency currently being achieved, as well as keeping a record for the journey up to that point, and encourage a driving style that minimises fuel consumption. For example, the increase in range achieved by using ECO PRO mode is shown in kilometres.

Advanced chassis technology and optional Adaptive Drive deliver the perfect balance of sports performance and comfort.

The driving experience in the new BMW 6-Series Coupe is defined by sporty handling characteristics. However, the cutting-edge chassis technology of the two-door car also delivers impressive ride comfort. Both the double wishbone front axle and the integral rear axle are made predominantly from aluminium. The chassis set-up is geared to the requirements of drivers with sporting intentions, although the dampers also respond sensitively to bumps in the road surface under high lateral acceleration.

Available as options for both model variants are Dynamic Damper Control and the Adaptive Drive system, which also includes Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation. The electronically controlled dampers adapt to both the nature of the road surface and the driver's style to prevent unwanted movements in the car body, while an innovative damping system adjusts the compression and rebound settings continuously and independently from one another. For example, a stiff chassis setting can be impressively combined with comfortable responses to unevenness in the road surface. The roll stabilisation feature also reduces effects such as body roll in high-speed corners and under sudden changes in direction.

The Electric Power Steering system with Servotronic function delivering speed-sensitive power assistance is unique in the BMW 6-Series Coupe segment and combines customary BMW precision, comfort and efficiency. In contrast to conventional mechanical/hydraulic systems, the power assistance is provided by an electric motor, which only goes to work - and therefore uses energy - if power assistance is required or desired by the driver.

In addition, the new BMW 6-Series Coupe is the first car in its class that can be ordered, as an option, with Integral Active Steering. This system combines the Active Steering system for the front axle - already available for the predecessor model - with a steering rear axle, allowing the steering angle and power assistance to be controlled at both the front and the rear with the help of electric motors. Precisely harmonised wheel deflections pave the way for extraordinary agility in dynamic driving situations. Also, Integral Active Steering displays an impressively deft touch around twisty mountain passes and in city traffic. At speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph), the rear wheels are turned in the opposite direction to the steering angle of the front wheels. This has the effect of reducing the car's turning circle and the amount of steering effort required. At higher speeds, Integral Active Steering gives the car extremely comfortable and assured reactions when changing lanes and cornering. The rear wheels follow the same steering movements as the front wheels, enabling the car to follow the course set by the driver with even greater immediacy and precision.

Drive Dynamic Control gives the driver the choice of car set-up.

With Drive Dynamic Control, the virtues of sportiness and comfort can take precedence as the situation demands. Drivers can make their own choice of suspension settings in NORMAL, SPORT and SPORT+ modes using a button on the centre console. In the new BMW 640i Coupe, ECO PRO mode can also be activated. If the Dynamic Damper Control or Adaptive Drive option has been specified, the COMFORT setting can also be used. In this mode, as well as adjusting the accelerator pedal progression, engine responses, power steering characteristics, DSC response thresholds and the shift dynamics of the automatic gearbox, Drive Dynamic Control also tweaks the damper responses and, if necessary, the roll stabilisation settings. On cars also fitted with Integral Active Steering, the basic steering set-up is also adjusted according to the mode selected, as well as the level of power assistance. As a result, in SPORT and SPORT+ modes the car's sporting responses are sharpened even further.

The lightweight, floating-calliper brakes with inner-vented discs are easy to use with precision, and their effectiveness is reinforced by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). This driving stability system brings together technology such as the anti-lock braking system (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), the Start-Off Assistant, the automatic Brake Drying function and brake fade compensation. Standard equipment also includes 18-inch light-alloy wheels on the new BMW 650i Coupe or 17-inch rims for the new BMW 640i Coupe, as well as runflat tyres and a runflat indicator.

The selection of driver assistance systems and mobility services available from BMW ConnectedDrive for the new BMW 6-Series Coupe is even broader than that enjoyed by its predecessor. These systems and services enable the intelligent link-up of the driver and car with the outside world, enhancing both comfort and safety and the use of the car's infotainment features. Among the options largely unmatched in this vehicle category are the Lane Change Warning System, Lane Departure Warning System, Speed Limit Info, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, the rear-view camera, Surround View and the BMW Parking Assistant. The optional BMW Head-Up Display - which projects important information onto the windscreen, directly in the driver's line of sight - remains the only system of its kind in the segment. And the latest generation of this BMW innovation is now available in the new BMW 6-Series Coupe. For the first time, a full spectrum of colours is used to display graphics and symbols, making road sign symbols, for example, impressively realistic. At the same time, the Head-Up Display is now able to present a wider range of information. Depending on vehicle specification, the following can be shown in the Head-Up Display: High Guiding function information supplied by the navigation system, information from the Speed Limit Info system, Check/Control messages, status messages from the Lane Departure Warning System and warnings from the BMW Night Vision system.

The standard-fitted comfort-enhancing features on board the new BMW 6-Series Coupe include 2-zone climate control, a multifunction steering wheel, electric steering column adjustment, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, Cruise Control with braking function, a rain sensor with integrated automatic driving lights control, and a HiFi audio system complete with nine speakers, MP3-compatible CD drive and AUX-IN connection. Meanwhile, technology such as a DVD changer, TV module, DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) receiver and USB audio interface allows passengers to enjoy their personal choice of on-board entertainment.

When it comes to delivering audio pleasure of the highest order, the Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System designed especially for the new BMW 6-Series Coupe hits all the right notes. Jointly developed by the Danish audio specialists and BMW, this system produces an exceptionally natural sound from 16 speakers distributed around the cabin. It is a fully active system featuring digital signal processing, which means the two bass speakers, seven mid-range speakers and seven tweeters all have individual amplifiers. This technology enables the targeted modification of any sound reflections inside the vehicle. The Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System uses Di-rac Dimensions™ technology to recreate the acoustics of a reference listening room in the passenger compartment. The electrical signals are converted into precisely defined sound waves using neodymium magnet drivers, and the mid-range speakers feature extremely stiff Hexacone diaphragms. The outstanding quality of the Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System is underlined by exclusive design features. The form and colour of the advanced all-aluminium speaker grilles have been tailored precisely to the interior design of the new BMW 6-Series Coupe. The special perforation pattern of the grilles is created using a very sophisticated drilling technique. The grille mounts are not visible from the outside, ensuring that the grilles stand out from their surroundings by appearing to float in a slightly raised position above the surface.
